Offices

Useful Information for Faculty

General note on College versus personal work

Phone calls, photocopying, and other services related to teaching, research, and professional development may be billed to the College. However, costs related to professional work that is substantially income‑producing (e.g. consulting, commercial publishing) should be billed as personal expenses.

Instructional Budgets

Faculty may draw on departmental or general instructional budgets to cover modest expenses such as film rentals, guest lecture honoraria, and instructional supplies. When in doubt, please check with me before committing funds. Please consult the attached sample forms for purchase and reimbursement. Funds are also available to support field trips. Please see me.

Office Equipment

Requests for filing cabinets, bookshelves, bulletin boards, and so on, should be made to Dan Cotter, Plant Operations Director.

Keys

Keys for offices and buildings are available from Susan Caffery, Assistant to the Plant Operations Director (Maintenance Building).

Office Supplies

Small quantities of some supplies (e.g. chalk, paper clips) are available. Large quantities of supplies must be special-ordered. See Margaret.

Telephones

Questions about equipment and service should be addressed to Dan. Please limit personal long-distance calls.

FAX:

The College's FAX number is (802) 257‑4154. The FAX machine is located at the switchboard. Forms requesting FAX services are available at the switchboard. Outgoing personal Faxes will be billed at cost plus $1.00. Incoming FAX messages will be placed in your mailbox as soon as they are received.

Business Cards

If you would like to have business cards, please request them from Susan Caffery.

Photocopying

The photocopy machines are located in the Mather Building mailroom. All machines require a PIN, which Margaret can provide. You may prefer to leave materials for photocopying with Margaret, recognizing that advance notice is appreciated and usually necessary. Needless to say, copy what you need, but keep in mind that the instructional budget is charged about $.03/copy, which adds up to a significant cost. There is also a coin photocopy machine in the library. An override key is available in the library office for work to be billed to the College. Please use this machine only for materials that should not leave the library.

Photocopying of Copyrighted Material

Marlboro College, by vote of the faculty, subscribes to the fair use guidelines as detailed on the attached page. If you wish to distribute materials under these guidelines, please complete a photocopy request form (sample attached) available from Margaret.  See this link: Photocopying for Course Use for more information.

Academic Technology

Marlboro College uses Moodle (Courses) for posting course syllabi online, sharing e-reserve readings, hosting discussions and more. For help with the Courses system, using technology in the classroom or to schedule technology training contact Tobias Gelston x147. Training Schedule.

Audio‑Visual Resources

DVD players are located in the Apple Tree (schedule in Registrar's Office), in D‑34, S‑117 WS1. Computer projectors are available in the Apple Tree, S-117, S-217, the library, Dalyrmple and World Studies One.  There is an additional projector and speakers available for checkout.  To schedule training, request support in use of the AV equipment or to checkout the projector contact Tobias Gelston x147.  Slide projectors are available in the Apple Tree. Video and digital editing equipment and support are available through Hilary Baker. College‑owned videos and DVDs are catalogued in the library.

Research and Travel Budget

There is limited financial support available for travel to conferences and professional meetings and for certain research expenses. Please check with me in advance on the availability of funds. If you travel on behalf of the College, other budget lines will cover your expenses.

Faculty Grants for Research and Performance

Competitive grants are awarded annually based on applications submitted in the spring for the following fiscal year.

Assistant to the Dean and Faculty

Margaret can assist you with word processing, photocopying, and diverse other tasks. Please give her as much notice as possible when making requests. As Margaret must set priorities, she will not always be able to accept all work you bring to her. Requests from the Dean’s office has top priority, followed by faculty requests related to teaching and governance (e.g. reading lists, exams, letters of recommendation, committee reports). Other modest requests, such as grant applications, lectures, or short papers, can usually be met with adequate notice.

Work/Study Assistance

If you have a special project or a need for on‑going assistance, you may request work/study help. Cathy Fuller, student employment coordinator, distributes request forms at the end of each semester for the next semester. Keep in mind that the budget is tight, and we are in the process of reviewing all positions. If your need is sporadic, such that you cannot reliably keep a student occupied 5 or 10 hours each week, you may request assistance through the Dean’s office. Please do not recruit students directly; all work/study assignments must be made by Cathy. If you have needs that cannot be met through the student employment program, limited additional funds may be available. Please see me.

Bookstore

The bookstore handles all course books and materials and is pleased to make special orders. Faculty normally receive discounts of 10% on in-stock merchandise and special order books. The bookstore asks faculty every term to submit a Textbook Request for each course being taught the following term. A deadline is set which allows time for the availability of books to be confirmed, and orders prepared. Bookstore staff can make inquiries on your behalf and can usually secure desk copies for books ordered for course use. Visit the Bookstore Website for more information or contact bookstore@marlboro.edu. Please see information on course use of photocopied material.

Library

The library houses approximately 75,000 items, primarily books; but also video recordings, audio books, and hundreds of journals. Special collections include Student Plans and the Rudyard Kipling Collections.

Circulation: Books circulate for the entire semester, but may be recalled if another community member needs the item. VHS and DVDs circulate for one week. Journals, reference materials, and Senior Plans of Concentration do not circulate.

Interlibrary Loan: Books, videos and journal articles needed for teaching or research, but not owned by the college, may be borrowed through our interlibrary loan network, usually without cost. Please contact the library for this service.

New Materials Requests: Faculty members are allotted portions of the library book budget, against which they may recommend new acquisitions. Faculty will be informed of the dollar amount of their shares and will receive periodic reports of remaining balances. Balances unspent by a spring date to be announced will be reallocated for general library purchases.

Electronic Resources: The library homepage links to the online catalog, as well as other library catalogs. Numerous databases are available at this site including InfoTrac, ProQuest, Lexis-Nexis, ebrary, ARTstor and JSTOR. These products are available both on campus and off campus.

Literature Searching Workshops: Arrangements may be made with the librarians for your classes or Dedicated Hour groups to be instructed in the use of the many electronic resources available.

Reserve Reading: Library materials, photocopies of journal articles, and personal materials under high demand for course use may be put on the reserve shelf. All reserve materials must be processed through the librarians. Effective August 2006, reserve books and AV items are locked and must be charged out before being removed from the reserve room.

Resources on Higher Education

I receive The Chronicle and a few other publications, which you should feel free to consult. Information about grants and fellowships (e.g. NEH Summer Stipends) that comes my way will be posted opposite the mailboxes and/or distributed as appropriate. Reference materials on grant sources are available through the Development Office.
