Brenda Foley - Director of World Studies

Brenda Foley has spent more than 10 years living outside the United States in England, Japan and Canada, and traveled extensively throughout Europe, Korea, Hong Kong and the Philippines. "I have been extremely fortunate in my life," notes Brenda, "to have had opportunities to experience other cultures in moments both profound and quiescent: from catching my breath as colleagues laid a wreath at the tomb in Hiroshima to waking to wild monkeys in Sasebo; from traveling by train through the alps to Slovakia to watching the World Cup in a pub with stranded fellow travelers in Vienna. If I had spent my life at home watching so-called ‘reality TV,' imagine what I would have missed. I'd rather create my own reality."

Brenda's scholarly work has resulted in papers presented in England, Finland, Czech Republic and the Netherlands. While most of her scholarship focuses on performance studies and gender, Brenda's recent conference panel participation has been in interdisciplinary pedagogy and the field of disability studies. "It is no coincidence that many of my presentations are for international conferences," states Brenda, " Performance studies has always had a global perspective and an avid interest in permeable borders, conceptual and literal."

In addition to overseeing world studies at Marlboro, Brenda's responsibilities as world studies director include pursuing and establishing international partnerships with other colleges, representing the college at conferences in the U.S/ and abroad and teaching the Senior Seminar and Colloquium in WSP. She works with the associate director and world studies committee (comprised of students and faculty from multiple disciplines) to increase opportunities for Marlboro students to expand their global perspectives. For more information, see Brenda's faculty profile.

Beverly Behrmann – Associate Director of World Studies

“I think people can learn academically from international programs and also feel inspired to pursue a passion,” says Beverly Behrmann. “To hear about people’s intercultural experiences can be inspirational for those on the home campus. It says ‘Look at this great big world out there and all the work that’s happening. You can be a part of it.’”

As the associate director of world studies, Beverly serves the college community in a myriad of ways. She can help you identify suitable study abroad programs and pertinent scholarship information. Beverly can also help you navigate the entire study abroad process from pre-departure to re-entry concerns. Closer to campus, Beverly prepares for and supports international students and scholars by attending to immigration and cultural adjustment matters. Furthermore, she teaches one one-credit course called ‘Finding an Internship.
